elevo vs WeTransfer
A direct alternative to WeTransfer, with no size limit.
WeTransfer takes your files to its servers and hands out a link. elevo sends them straight from your device to the other one, free, however big they are.
What a transfer site puts in the way
- A ceiling. WeTransfer's free plan covers up to 3 GB every 30 days, in at most 10 transfers.
- A clock. On the free plan the link stops working after 3 days.
- A detour. Everything is uploaded to its servers first, and downloaded from there afterwards.
The file makes the trip once, not twice.
A transfer service moves your file in two legs: first you upload it to its servers, then the other person downloads it from there. elevo connects the two devices and the file crosses once, as fast as that connection allows.
No ceiling to hit.
Past 3 GB in 30 days, WeTransfer's free plan stops and the paid ones begin, from US$ 8 a month. elevo sets no limit on size and charges nothing: the only ceiling is the free space on the other device.
It picks up where it stopped.
Close the lid, lose the Wi-Fi, restart the computer. What has arrived stays on disk, and the transfer goes on from there by itself.
The rest of it
- Encrypted end to end
- Only the two devices can read what travels between them.
- A code is all it takes
- No address book, no pairing. Whoever has the code can receive, for as long as you offer the files.
- Nothing gets replaced
- If a name is already taken on the other side, the new arrival gets a name of its own.
- No account
- Nothing to sign in to and no password. An e-mail address is asked for once, when you download.

When WeTransfer is the better fit
When the other person cannot install anything, or you cannot keep your device on until they download, a link that waits on a server is the right tool, and WeTransfer does that well.
Questions
Is elevo faster than WeTransfer?
That depends on the connection between the two devices. What changes is the route: with elevo the file crosses once, instead of going up to a server and coming down again. When the two devices cannot reach each other directly, the encrypted traffic passes through a relay, which is slower.
Do I get a link to send, as with WeTransfer?
You get a code that looks like a link: elevo.click followed by letters. Opened in a browser, it shows how to get elevo; pasted into elevo, it starts the transfer. The files themselves are never on a website.
Is elevo free?
Yes. The app is free to download and to use. If paid plans ever exist, nothing you already use starts charging by itself: the Terms say so.
Does the other person need elevo?
Yes. A send code opens in elevo on their device. Opened in a browser, the code leads to this site, to download it.
Does my device have to stay on?
Yes, while the other side is receiving. The files come from your device, so it has to be awake and online. Keep Awake looks after the awake part.
Send the next one straight there.
